The UK must rethink its approach to nurturing talent in order to adapt to the global economy

The UK faces a huge challenge because of the globalisation of value and talent. It has to move away from its 'Fortress Britain' mentality quickly - it can no longer dwell on its previous successes and we must rethink what we mean by talent and revise our models of business success on a global scale. If not, the UK runs the risk of being overtaken by economies such as the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) that are already making considerable headway in understanding the changing nature of talent and value.

Interesting to see the cathedral analogy used here. It was only last week I was talking to another HR leader who said that it was time we moved away from the cathedral building concept as it was to grandiose and idealistic. Hopefully this is not as indicative of a great divide in the HR profession as it would seem. Whatever your own view is of the analogy the fact remains that organisational performance ultimately depends on people and people work better when: * They have a clear sense of belonging to to the organisation * They feel appreciated. There may be different ways to skin that cat, but I suspect that as long as we separate people management and talent management as 2 separate disciplines we will never succeed.

Thank you Bay, 'grandiose and idealistic', it is a fair challenge. I was lucky enough to hear Anand give this speech, and you can read it for yourself in the report, available for download via the following link: http://www.forceforgood.com/Uploaded_Content/tool/2222010152042737.pdf Perhaps you had to be there but it was a very grounded contribution, and for me the power of it is not that it overstates the role of HR, but that it places that role in the necessary context of the need to create a sense of common purpose which aligns people within a business/organisation, and the country as a whole. Thanks for your comment, Tony
