Diary of a flexible worker

Last week was one of those weeks where everything seemed to go wrong!  It started with two very early starts to get my son ready for school ahead of going to work.  Of course, there were road works on the way to the hospital; like most parents there never seems to be enough hours in the day and delays like this really annoy me!  So I arrived to work in a bad mood and then  did a shift on a ward that I really didn't enjoy; so all in all not a good day.  Still I managed to get a little time to myself before I picked my son up from school in the early afternoon.  My work has been pretty demanding this week and I felt quite exhausted by it, but grateful that at least I can manage things better with my flexible working arrangements.   Really looking forward to half term now.  I have the week off work so fingers crossed I will have a little time to relax!

i worked two mornings on busy wards this week, with lots of patients but i was working with some realy nice  nursing staff which makes the shift much more pleasant, im realy lucky to be able to work flexibily, the nhs seem to understand the pressures of working  mums and carers like me trying to balance work and home life, all i had to do was request flexible working conditions in writing to my boss explaining my circumstances and now im able to choose the hours i work, this means i can take my son to school and fit my work round his needs.

also ive been given a carers parking permit, so not such a bad week after all!

i work at the local hospital for a few hours a week, whilst also caring for my physically disabled son, flexible working conditions have allowed me to do this for the past 8 and a half years, whilst my son is at school, i am a domestic assistant which means i go into  wards and do the tea round, deliver breakfast, help with the cleaning etc, during the week there are two assistants on duty , but if i work the weekend its just me which can be hard work ! i realy enjoy it , its different everyday, this week i worked mornings on the childrens ward, which is very rewarding, but next week it could be something completely different!
